Marathon, a Fortune 50 Company, has an immediate opening for qualified Pilots in its Marine Transportation Organization located in Catlettsburg, Kentucky. Marathon operates on the Western and Inland Waterways systems and boats are scheduled on a 28 day on/28 day off schedule. Qualified applicants must be licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard for multiple competencies according to waters navigated, ship tonnage, and waters within the area of responsibility.
Responsibilities:
The River Pilot has responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of the tow when the Captain is off duty. This is the entry-level piloting position within the marine group. The pilot is in charge of the safe, efficient and economical movement of product including but not limited to 10 million gallons housed in tow configurations up to 1,200 feet in length while the River Captain is at rest.
The River Pilot takes direction from the River Captain concerning tow configurations, drop-offs, pick-ups, and the duties of other crew members (deckhands, engineering deckhands, engineers, mates, cooks) on the River Pilot's watch.
The Pilot will periodically assume full responsibility for the Captain's duties, overseeing the work of crew members (deckhands, engineering deckhands, engineers, mates, cooks) concerning tows, tow configurations, maintenance of vessel, and other operational concerns.
During duty hours when the Captain is at rest, the pilot has direct control and responsibility of the boat, barges and crew, and is responsible for safely navigating the tow into river locks.
The pilot uses radar to determine the geographic position of the ship to navigate safely through tight spots, locks, and other waterway impediments and adverse conditions (darkness, narrow passage-ways, etc).
When on duty, the Pilot coordinates the activities of crew members responsible for signaling devices, such as ship's whistle, flashing lights, flags, and radio to signal ships in vicinity.
Uses radar and other navigational aids such as lights, lighthouses, and buoys to avoid bridge abutments, pilings, locks, and other hazards to navigate through bridges, bridge pilings, and other waterway obstructions.
Completes all U.S. Coast Guard, DOT and MPC required paperwork as directed by the Captain.
Qualifications:
Qualified applicants must have either a high school diploma or equivalent relevant experience and must be licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard for multiple competencies according to waters navigated, ship tonnage, and waters within the area of responsibility. Posting on the Western Rivers and the Inland Waterways systems is required. Marathon requires that applicants be completely posted on one of these river systems: Ohio, Tennessee/Cumberland, Mississippi, Intercoastal Waterway. Currently we are soliciting applicants with postings on the Mississippi River from Wood River, Illinois to the Gulf. The successful applicant should also be experienced with 4000+HP vessels.
Recently, we have been made aware of multiple scams whereby unauthorized individuals are using Marathon's name and logo to solicit potential job-seekers for employment. In some cases, job-seekers are being contacted directly, both by phone and e-mail. In other instances, these unauthorized individuals are placing advertisements for fake positions with both legitimate websites and fabricated ones. These individuals are typically promising high-paying jobs with the requirement that the job-seeker send money to pay for things such as visa applications or processing fees.
Please be advised that Marathon will never ask potential job-seekers for any sort of advance payment as part of the recruiting or hiring process.
